CHAIR

Alessandro Pezzoli
DIST - Politecnico di Torino and Università di Torino
Italy

Brief Bio
Alessandro Pezzoli is an Assistant Professor with tenure in Meteo-Hydrology & Weather Risk Management at Turin Polytechnic and in the University of Turin. He holds BEng in Civil Engineering and MEng in Hydraulic Engineering both from the Turin Polytechnic, a MSc in Port Operations from the Italian Naval Academy and PhD in Meteorology and Oceanography from Toulon University (FRANCE). Before working as Assistant Professor with tenure in Turin Polytechnic he worked as Voluntary assistant at the Institute of Cosmo-geophysics of the C.N.R., Turin. After that he served as Officer (Lieutenant) in the Italian Navy in the Coast Guard Corps, serving at the Harbor Office of the port of Imperia. In April 1991, following the Haven oil tanker disaster in the Gulf of Liguria, seconded to the Crisis Unit of the Imperia's Prefecture (Meteorologist), also acting as Liaison Officer with the French Anti-pollution force. He was Visiting Professor in “Meteorology” for MEng course in “Marine Engineering” at Institut des Sciences de l’Ingenieur de Toulon et du Var - University of Toulon and Var (France) and Visiting Professor in “Meteorology and Oceanography” for PhD course in “Marine Engineering” at Escola Politecnica – Universidade de Sao Paolo (Brazil). Currently, he is Scientific Adviser of a very innovative Research Unit in Meteorology applied to the Sport founded in the DIST - Politecnico di Torino and Università di Torino.

SCOPE

It is important to note that this Special Session will be opened for all the researches applied to the Sailing Sports where the new technologies are applied in a multi-disciplinary approach. In particular the following topics are welcome: - Meteorology and Oceanography - Aerodynamic and Hydrodynamic - Computer application for Race Strategy and Race Tactic Analysis - Video analysis applied to Sailing Sports - New technologies applied for the evaluation of the Physical Strength of the Sailors

Topics: The use of the different technology in the sport is always more diffused. The Sailing Sport is, for sure, one of the most complex and technological sport. The hydrodynamic problem as well as the recent development of aerodynamical studies applied to the new “big catamaran” in America’s Cup witness for us how the technology can be applied to the Sailing Sport. Nevertheless the interaction between the boat and the water and the air is not the alone point to be studied. The race strategy as well as the race tactic can be studied and some strong application of technology there are also on this topic. The climatological and meteorological analyses are a focal point in the improvement of the performance in the Sailing Sport as well as the new technologies (i.e.: GPS, video analysis made on-board, etc…) can be used to improve the performance of the athletes. In the same time will be important evaluate the physical training of the athletes and also in this part of the Sport Science applied to Sailing the new technologies can be applied fruitful for the improvement of the performance. Finally it is very important to note that this Special Session will be opened for all the researches applied to the Sailing Sports where the new technologies are applied in a multi-disciplinary approach.
